SEO for Sri Lankan Online Stores: 8 Simple Steps to Get Found on Google
Written by Nethma DissanayakeOnline Store Builder3 min read
A beginner-friendly SEO guide for small online stores in Sri Lanka: Search Console, keywords, titles, category pages, speed, Google Business Profile and content.

Many online store owners in Sri Lanka depend on Facebook and Instagram for customers. Those channels work, but you rent your audience there, and one algorithm change can cut your reach. Google search brings people who are already looking for what you sell. This guide explains simple, practical SEO steps for a small Sri Lankan online store, using free tools and no jargon.
What SEO means for a shop
Search engine optimisation is making it easy for Google to understand your pages and for shoppers to choose them. For a store, that means three things: pages that match what people search for, a site that loads fast and works on phones, and signals that show your business is real. You do not need to do everything at once. Small steps add up over a few months.
Step 1: Set up Google Search Console
Search Console is free and shows how Google sees your site. Add your website, verify it and submit your sitemap. After a few days you can see which searches show your pages, which pages have problems and whether Google can read them. Check it once a month and fix any errors it reports.
Step 2: Find the words your customers use
Make a list of the phrases a customer would type, for example "buy school bags online Colombo" or "organic coconut oil delivery Sri Lanka". Type them into Google and look at the suggestions at the bottom of the page and at the "People also ask" box. These show real wording. Plan one page for each main product category and use its main phrase in the page title, the heading and the first paragraph.
Step 3: Write clear titles and descriptions
Every page needs a title that says what the page is and who it is for, ideally under about 60 characters. Add a short description that makes a shopper want to click. Avoid repeating the same title on many pages. On Shopify and WooCommerce you can edit both fields for each product and collection.
Step 4: Make category pages useful
Category pages often rank better than single products, because they match broader searches. Add a short introduction at the top, written for people, that explains what the category contains and how to choose. Keep filters simple and keep the product names clear.
Step 5: Fix speed and mobile use
Most visitors in Sri Lanka browse on a phone, often on mobile data. A slow store loses shoppers before they see a product. Compress images, remove apps you do not use and keep the design simple. Our guide on how to speed up a Shopify store lists the main fixes, and the same ideas apply to WooCommerce.
Step 6: Claim your Google Business Profile
If you have a shop, a showroom or a pickup point, create a free Google Business Profile with your real address, opening hours, phone number and photos. This helps you show up in local searches and on maps. If you sell only online, you can still use a profile if customers can visit or collect, but follow Google's rules and never use a fake address.
Step 7: Create helpful content
Answer the questions your customers already ask. A guide such as "how to choose the right size" or "how to look after a leather bag" can bring people who are not ready to buy yet, and it shows that you know the product. Write in plain language, link to the relevant products and keep the content up to date. This is the same approach behind our product page checklist.
Step 8: Build trust signals
Show your business name, contact details, return policy and delivery information clearly. Add honest customer reviews. Keep your Privacy Policy and contact pages complete. These details help shoppers and also tell search engines that a real business sits behind the site.
What to expect
SEO is slow. A new store may need several months before pages start to rank, and no honest person can promise a first-page position. What you can do is improve steadily: add a few well-written pages each month, keep the site fast and watch Search Console to see what works.
Final thoughts
Start with Search Console, a short keyword list and clear titles. Then improve speed, category pages and content one step at a time. If you want help with your store's technical SEO, speed or setup, see my freelance e-commerce developer service in Sri Lanka.
